Tip Us

Coast Brief (coastbrief.com) is an independent digital news publisher owned and operated by Southern Cross Press Pty Ltd (ACN 623 891 045), with its registered office at Level 14, 1 Martin Place, Sydney NSW 2000. Our Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Harper, oversees all editorial standards and publication decisions. We rely on tip-offs from readers to break stories that serve the public interest. This page explains how to share information with us.

What makes a good tip?

A good tip for Coast Brief is a story idea that has clear Australian relevance and serves the public interest – whether it involves policy developments, business news, technology, or cultural issues. We look for information that is timely, verifiable, and not already widely reported. Tips that expose wrongdoing, inefficiency, or systemic problems are especially valuable.

We welcome tips on federal and state politics, fiscal policy, corporate misconduct, emerging tech, and social trends. If your tip relates to a specific geographic region or community, include context. We also appreciate leads on stories that challenge dominant narratives without oversimplifying. Original documents, internal communications, or firsthand accounts strengthen a tip considerably.

How can I send a tip?

You can send a tip to Coast Brief by emailing tips@coastbrief.com, newsdesk@coastbrief.com, or press@coastbrief.com. For sensitive material, consider using a secure method if available. Our editorial team monitors these addresses regularly.

If your tip is time-sensitive, flag it in the subject line. General inquiries about coverage should go to contact@coastbrief.com. For commercial matters, use partnerships@coastbrief.com. Our full contact details are on the Contact page.

What information should I include?

Include as much detail as possible: the core issue, relevant dates, locations, people involved, and any supporting documents or evidence. Clear, concise explanations help our editors assess the story quickly. If you have multiple documents, summarise the key points first.

You do not need to be a journalist to submit a tip – we value insider knowledge and lived experience. However, we cannot investigate anonymous claims without corroborating evidence. If you are a source with direct knowledge, state your connection to the matter. Providing your own background and how you obtained the information adds credibility.

How does Coast Brief verify tips?

Coast Brief verifies every tip through our standards desk, led by Fact-Checking Lead Thomas Walsh. Our process includes source verification, cross-referencing with authoritative documents, and consulting experts where needed. We follow strict protocols outlined in our Fact-Checking Policy and Sources & Standards pages.

We never publish a story based on a single anonymous tip. Each lead is corroborated with at least two independent sources or documentary evidence. If we cannot verify a claim, we may hold the story or ask you for further information. Our Editorial Policy requires that all published material meets our accuracy standards.

Will my identity remain confidential?

Coast Brief treats all tipsters with discretion. We do not disclose your identity without your explicit consent, unless required by law. Our journalists and editors are trained to protect sensitive sources. We encourage you to specify your confidentiality preferences when submitting.

If you wish to remain completely anonymous, do not include identifying details in your email. Note that complete anonymity may limit our ability to verify your tip. For extremely sensitive disclosures, we recommend using encrypted channels; contact our newsdesk to arrange this. Your privacy rights are further outlined in our Privacy Policy.

What happens after I submit a tip?

After you submit a tip to Coast Brief, our editorial team reviews it within a reasonable timeframe. If it matches our editorial priorities, it is assigned to a relevant editor for further investigation. We may contact you for additional details if you have provided contact information.

Not all tips result in a story. We prioritise leads that are newsworthy, verifiable, and in the public interest. If your tip is not pursued, we typically do not send a response. We encourage you to follow up if you have updates. Tips that align with our beat areas – politics, business, technology, culture – receive the fastest attention.

How do I request a correction?

If you believe a story on Coast Brief contains an error, please email corrections@coastbrief.com with the URL, a description of the mistake, and supporting evidence. Our corrections policy is outlined at Corrections Policy. We aim to respond and correct promptly.

Corrections are handled by our standards desk under Thomas Walsh. We will update the article and add a correction notice where appropriate. We do not charge for corrections. For complaints about editorial conduct, please refer to our Complaints Procedure.
